First Winter Ascent of Mt. Rainier on 1922 Newsreel

Friday, December 9th, 2011
Check out this film from 1922 that documents the first ever winter ascent of Mt. Rainier by Jean and Jacques Landry, Jacques Bergues and newsreel cameraman Charles Perryman. It's also the first motion picture ever taken on the summit of Mount Rainier, and is the oldest known climbing or skiing film in the State of Washington.

The film come courtesy of The Mountaineers. In 2003, Charles Perryman's grandson, Steve Turner, contacted The Mountaineers about the film after reading about Perryman's climb in the Alpenglow Ski Mountaineering History Project. This led to an eight-year effort by Skoog to acquire the newsreel films. The project was completed in October 2011:

Climbing Mt. Rainier

Friday, August 19th, 2011
Excellent video on what it's like climbing Mt. Rainier in Washington state with Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. (RMI). Climbing the 14,410-foot peak was put on my radar a couple of years ago after attending a presentation by one of the RMI guides at a local gear shop. This video seems to pretty much show how a typical three-day expedition transpires - just as the RMI representative explained.

The Backpacker Tough Guy (and Gal) Challenge

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
Want to win a guided climb up Mt. Rainier (airfare included!) with International Mountain Guides, including an array of Outdoor Research apparel? All you have to do is prove you're the toughest backpacker out there.

All you have to do to show you're the toughest guy or gal is create a video (no more than five minutes long) to prove it.

Backpacker Magazine has provided some intentionally vague guidelines:

* the toughest backpackers should be able to do things like start a fire with one match

* ascend thousands of feet of trail and mountainside in a day

* treat common first aid mishaps

* find your way out of trouble with a map and compass.

Of course, we each bring something unique to the table too.

Create a video demonstrating your backcountry badassery and upload to YouTube. Send Backpacker Magazine the link by July 15th, 2011 (toughguys@backpacker.com), and the editors will choose one winner, two second place finishers, and five third place finishers.

Good Luck!

17-year-old becomes youngest to conquer 7 Summits

Sunday, January 24th, 2010
Johnny Collinson, a high school senior from Utah, just became the youngest person to climb the seven summits - the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.

The 17-year-old from Snowbird made it to the top of Antarctica's 16,076-foot Vinson Massif this past Monday, officially making him the youngest person to successfully climb the seven summits - and doing it all in just one year!

Collinson's goal was to top them all in 365 days. The final feat was completed just hours before that deadline.

Collinson began his mountaineering career with a summit of Mt. Rainier at age four.

His quest for the seven summits began in January 2009 with a summit of Argentina's Aconcagua.

Collinson teamed up with Mountain Madness, a Seattle-based adventure company, to help guide him to the top. From their high camp, the team had an eleven-hour round trip push to the summit of Vinson. They encountered sub-zero temperatures, icy slopes, and high winds, but Collinson was undeterred from skiing off the summit and back down to high camp.

Collinson is quoted through Mountain Madness as saying: "…climbing to the top of the 7 Summits seems like it would be the greatest physical feat I could accomplish. Like anyone my age, it's easy to become lost in the world of electronic distractions. I want to live life instead of watching it on TV."

Amen, brother....

Here are the dates of each of his summits:

* January 18, 2010; Vinson Massif
* August 20, 2009; Carstenz
* July 21, 2009; Kilimanjaro
* July 8, 2009; Elbrus
* June 26, 2009; Denali
* May 19, 2009; Everest
* January 19, 2009; Aconcagua
