127 Hours: The Aron Ralston Story

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
Aron Ralston, the man who sawed his arm off after it was pinned under a boulder in a slot canyon in Utah, is the subject of a new movie coming out in early November.

The movie, called 127 Hours as a result of the amount of time he was trapped, is based on Aron's life story as told in his book "Between a Rock and a Hard Place".

The film features rising star James Franco as Ralston.

The trailer, below, is pretty compelling. I definitely plan on checking this movie out.

A Walk for Sunshine Movie Premieres in Asheville

Monday, July 12th, 2010
The A Walk for Sunshine / Appalachian Trail Show movie premieres in Asheville next Tuesday, July 20, at the Fine Arts Theatre.

In this documentary of engaging tales and stunning photography, author, adventurer and story teller Jeff Alt takes you with him on his 2,000 mile hike along the Appalachian Trail.

Alt shares humorous and hair raising animal encounters of sleeping with a skunk, being charged by a bear, chased by a bull, wild ponies, moose, mice, and his hilarious food cravings, all for a noble cause.

Alt's brother, Aaron, lives at the Sunshine Children's Home; a home for people with developmental disabilities. Alt's adventure inspired an annual Walk-With-Sunshine event which has raised over $180,000 for Sunshine. The movie is based on Alt's award-winning book, A Walk for Sunshine.

The Fine Arts Theatre is located at 36 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville. For more information on viewing the movie, please click here.

2009/2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival Trailer

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010
Below is a trailer for the 2009/2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival. Let me tell you, there is some outstanding and incredibly beautiful footage in this short film. Make sure to watch the last scene. I posted this same footage on this blog about a year ago. I thought that maybe it was manipulated, but now appears to be the real deal.

You can click here to see the full tour schedule. There are several stops in the Southern Appalachian region over the next couple months.

180 South

Sunday, January 17th, 2010
"It's not an adventure unless something goes wrong"

- Yvon Chouinard

Below is a trailer from a new movie that retraces the footsteps of Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and North Face founder Doug Tompkins' road trip to Patagonia.

In 1968, Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins took a 10,000-mile surfing and climbing trip across central and South America. The journey would not only inspire their flagship gear companies, it would also inspire a passion to protect the last wild places on Earth. The film 180 South, with the help of some incredible images, recreates the spirit of that journey.

180 South is scheduled to be in theaters in March. This looks like a pretty cool film:
