Thursday, September 16th, 2010
Throughout the spring and summer the Hanesbrand Everest Team has been posting a series of 30 videos on their Youtube Channel called Steps to the Summit.

The videos offer an insightful look at what it takes to climb the highest mountain in the world, as well as how to apply those lessons to your everyday life and in achieving your own goals.

The series is hosted by expedition team leader Jaime Clarke.

Below is a short introduction to the series:

Traversing the Khumbu Icefall

Friday, August 6th, 2010
I saw this on the Adventure Blog the other day.

This excellent video captures the experience of crossing the infamous Khumbu Icefall from the perpective of the climber.

The video was shot with a helmet-mounted camera as climbers passed over the Khumbu glacier just above Base Camp on Mt. Everest this past spring:

The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Opening this weekend, The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest brings to screen the last days of adventurer and Mount Everest climber George Mallory – the man who may or may not have been the first to scale the world’s most highest peak. After disappearing 800 feet from the summit in 1924, Mallory’s body was never found – until present-day climber Conrad Anker discovered it, frozen and intact, 75 years later.

Linking the past with the present, The Wildest Dream recounts Anker’s efforts to scale Everest in precisely the same fashion as Mallory – with authentic equipment and clothing – to see if Mallory could indeed have made it to the top. Sifting through clues left by Mallory, some of which have only come to light with the discovery of his body, Anker and his team attempt to solve the mystery of Mallory’s death and grant him the accolades that he may well be due.

Narrated by actor Liam Neeson, The Wildest Dream will be released in both 35 mm and giant screen formats. It will include never-before-seen archival footage combined with the grandeur of present-day Everest.

The film is set to open across the U.S. on August 6th.

Below are two film clips of the movie. The first is the official trailer:

The second clip takes a look into the Himalayan superstitions that surround Everest, and the warnings that Mallory received from monks living in the area that implored him not to go. They told him that they feared something bad would happen to him....

Are Mt. Everest ‘Firsts’ Getting Out of Control?

Monday, May 31st, 2010
As many of you are already aware, on May 22nd, 13-year-old Jordan Romero successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, and in the process, became the youngest person to reach the top of the world.

Alan Arnette, an avid climber who has summited Mt. Everest on three occasions himself, publishes one of the best climbing/mountaineering websites on the internet. Arnette recently weighed in with his thoughts on Jordan and what he has just accomplished. It's an excellent article that provides some interesting perspectives on the story and the controversy surrounding Jordan due to his age.

Last year a 50-strong group of amateurs climbed to the 16,945-foot Gorak Shep plateau (just above the Everest Base Camp), in order to set the world record for the highest cricket match.

In a related story, Wend Magazine recently published an interesting article that asks the question:

Are Mount Everest ‘Firsts’ Getting Out of Control?

Based on the italicised quote above you can get a flavor for some of the ridiculous "Firsts" that are being attempted on the roof of the world in recent years. You can check this article out by clicking here.

Jordan Romero becomes youngest to reach Everest

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010
There's a brief posting on Jordan Romero's website stating that the 13-year old has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, thus becoming the youngest person to reach the top of the world.

Here's what was posted on his blog earlier today:

The team just called in and confirmed that they are standing on top of Mt. Everest - the highest peak in the world. Their dreams have now come true. Everyone sounded unbelievably happy. They also thanked everyone who supported them and encouraged them throughout their journey.

I’m sure we’ll hear more from them soon!

A subsequent posting on the blog also states that the Team’s SPOT GPS is indicating that the team has arrived safely back at Camp 2 (24,750 ft) roughly 26 hours after reaching the summit.

For Jordan, Mt. Everest just became the sixth of the "Seven Summits" - the highest points on each continent - that he has now summited. He hopes to become the youngest to reach all "Seven Summits" by tackling Mt. Vinson in the Antarctic later this year.

Congratulations to Jordan!!
