Smokies struggling to clamp down on hog infestation

Sunday, January 24th, 2010
The Knox News published an in-depth article today on the hog infestation plaguing the Smokies. The wild pigs wreak havoc on the ecosystem by eating rare plants and salamanders, defecating in streams and turning up the ground.

This year the park has removed 620 wild hogs. But the problem has persisted since the 1940s and likely will continue.

"The speculation is that hunters are illegally releasing feral pigs that eventually make their way inside the park," said park biologist Bill Stiver. "It's a major problem not just here, but all over North America."
