As a result of high winds and rain, there are several weather related stories from the Smokies in the last 2 days.
> Last night a women was killed while traveling north-bound on Newfound Gap Road when several trees on the west side of the road fell onto the passenger side of the car. According to the Park Service, winds of 70 mph were recorded prior to the incident.
> Two rock slides occurred today on Highway 441 between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, forcing a detour. The rockslides happened between Connor Heights and Caney Creek Road, closing both southbound lanes. One person was hospitalized as a result of the slide.
Due to the instability of the rocks in the area of the slide, TDOT officials said it could mean a detour is in place for up to a month.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park spokesperson Bob Miller said the right, southbound lane was completely blocked, with the left lane partially blocked. However, material was still sliding onto the road as of 4 p.m.
The detour involves sharing the road on the northbound side for a stretch.
> Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, NC is closed as a result of snow.
> There's flooding in Cades Cove. WVLT is also reporting that a gust of wind collapsed a 100+ year old barn. The article includes video of some of the flooding.
Right now, the following roads are closed in the Smokies:
• Newfound Gap Road (US-441)
• The southbound portion of the Spur (US-441) between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is closed due to a rock slide. Traffic is being rerouted into the northbound lane.
• Forge Creek Road in Cades Cove
