In November of 2008, Les Stroud, host of “Survivorman,” announced that he was ending his popular show on the Discovery Channel, and would look into other projects someday down the road.
Stroud was quoted as saying:
“You can only do seven days surviving without food a certain number of times a year. I’m pleased with what I have done, I’ve been copied around the world, but 25 times I’ve not eaten anything for a week while sleeping on rocks. I need to move on.”
It appears that Survivorman has finely found that new project. The Discovery Channel just announced that Stroud will launch a new program called, Beyond Survival with Les Stroud.
The show will premier on Friday, August 27 at 10PM ET/PT.
In this new series Stroud travels to some of the most remote places on the planet to learn the survival techniques of indigenous tribes rarely shown to people outside their own tribes.
Here's a "trailer" from the new series:
Looks pretty good!
Stroud is author of a book: Survive!: Essential Skills and Tactics to Get You Out of Anywhere - Alive.
He's also published several DVD videos, including Alone in the American Wilderness, Season 3 of Survivorman, Season 2 and Season 1.

Bear Grylls: Fan vs. Wild Challenge
Sunday, April 4th, 2010
Bear Grylls: Love him or hate him. If you love him, this is your chance to meet your hero. Hate him, and maybe this is your chance to possibly show him up and prove you're tougher. The Discovery Channel is running a Fan vs. Wild Challenge contest now through April 30th. Before that deadline, those interested must submit a photo and brief essay explaining how you embrace the thrill of adventure every day and why you'd make a great candidate for the Fan vs. Wild program.
Four fans will be selected to participate in a Bear Grylls'-led boot camp with pro athletes in western Canada this June. Throughout the adventure, Bear will assess the fans' ability to embrace various adrenaline-pumping challenges. This portion of the contest will air as a multi-part video series on Discovery.com in August.
At the end of the competition, one of the four participants will be chosen to go with Bear on a full-length Man vs. Wild adventure to air on the Discovery Channel this fall.
Since this is a promotion involving Degree Men Deodorant (I assume this is the reason), only men 21 years of age and older are allowed to participate.

Can you survive in the wilderness in the winter?
Friday, December 11th, 2009
I'm sure most you would never really want to actually find out, but you could test yourself - virtually - by playing the Discovery Channel's "Life or Death Game".
The scenario is that you are on a guided extreme winter hike to a luxury cabin. You awake after the first night to find that the guide has left - with all the food - and you're still two days away from the cabin. Can you survive?
Warning: the game can be quite annoying because everytime you miss the right answer, you're forced to start over again. Fortunately there's only a handful of questions. All in all though, it's a pretty good exercise because there are a couple of questions with counter-intuitive answers, forcing you to think outside of the box, which is something that would come in handy in a real survival situation.
The site also has other scenarios including being lost at sea and being stranded in the jungle.
