The Second Annual “America Is Your Park” Campaign Underway
Wednesday, July 6th, 2011
The National Park Foundation, in partnership with Coca-Cola, America’s State Parks and the National Recreation and Park Association, recently launched the second annual “America Is Your Park” campaign.
The three parks that receive the most votes by September 6th will be awarded recreation grants, made possible by the Coca-Cola “Live Positively” initiative, in the following amounts:
First Place - $100,000
Second Place - $50,000
Third Place - $25,000
There are several ways people can vote between now and September 6th:
1. Click on their favorite park at LivePositvely.com and vote
2. Upload photos of themselves in their favorite park to LivePositvely.com
3. Starting August 10th, they can upload video of themselves in their favorite park to LivePositvely.com
4. Starting July 11th, people also can vote by checking into a park using Facebook Places
There is no limit on the amount of times you can vote.
Right now, after about a week of voting, the Great Smoky Mountains is in third place. Little Ocmulgee State Park out of Georgia is in second, which was also a park that was among the top vote getters last year. In first place, and with a commanding lead, is Soudan Underground Mine State Park in Minnesota. Coincidentally, it was Bear Head Lake State Park, literally just down the road from Soudan Mines, that came out of nowhere last year to take the $100,000 grant and upset the front-running Smokies.
For the next two months fans of the Smoky Mountains will have their work cut out for them.....

Great Smokies taking it on the chin right now!
Monday, August 16th, 2010
There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place.
-- Vince Lombardi
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
-- Bluto from Animal House
It’s roughly half-time for the Coca-Cola Live Positively $100,000 recreation grant contest, and the Great Smokies, quite frankly, is still getting its butt whipped by a minor state park from Minne-so-cold.
Whoever is behind the shellacking that Bear Head Lake State Park is putting on the Smokies is well organized and well motivated. We’re staring at an upset of epic proportions!
Right now we’re down by more than 340,000 votes!
There’s still time, however. Voting ends on August 31st. If you think that the Great Smoky Mountains can put this money to good use, please take the time to vote several times.
It’s pretty interesting how much press this contest/promotion is generating for Coke. Quite a marketing coup for them….

The Great Smokies needs your help – ASAP!
Monday, August 9th, 2010
A few days ago I posted about a $100,000 recreation grant that Coca-Cola was offering to a state or national park that received the most votes in its Live Positively initiative.
At that time the Great Smoky Mountains appeared to be in firm control of first place as they had a wide lead over Little Ocmulgee State Park out of Georgia.
Somewhere along the way, in the last day or two, a small state park out of Minnesota has taken a commanding lead: as in 341,000 votes to only 181,000 votes for GSMNP, which is still in second place.
I hope this is only like a 16 seed jumping out in front of a #1 seed early in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Yea, they're excited to be there, and have nothing to lose, but once the big power house comes back to Earth after getting chewed-out by their coach they start to flex their muscle and take command of the court.
That small upstart in question, Bear Head Lake State Park, I happened to visit on the same day that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait back in 1990. It's a very beautiful park, but the mosquitoes and black flies were just horrible. Maybe it was the time of year, but the locals say that the lowly mosquito is the state bird in Minnesota.
Anyway, I digress.
Between now and 8/31, you can vote as often as you like. As we all know, the Smokies sure could use that money.

Help Smoky Mountains win $100K from Coca-Cola
Saturday, July 31st, 2010
Earlier this week Coca-Cola launched the "America Is Your Park" campaign to encourage millions of Americans to get active outdoors and to cast a vote for their favorite park in order to win a $100,000 recreation grant made possible by Coca-Cola's Live Positively initiative.
From July 29 to August 31, people can go to LivePositively.com to cast a vote for their favorite state or national park to win the title of "America's Favorite Park" and a $100,000 grant from Coca-Cola for new activity equipment such as bikes (much needed in Smokies) and kayaks, or for the restoration and construction of activity areas.
Right now, it's basically a two-way race between the Smokies and Little Ocmulgee State Park out of Georgia to win the prize. George Bagby State Park is a somewhat distant third.
