Top 10 Western North Carolina stories of 2009

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Yesterday the Asheville Citizen-Times ran an article listing the top 10 historically resonant Western North Carolina stories of 2009. A few stories making the list that impacted hikers and outdoor lovers, include:

1) Bears.

2) The Interstate 40 rock slide.

9) The U.S. Forest Service lifting the ban on boating on the Upper Chattooga, a river designated as a federal “Wild and Scenic River.”

10) The 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

After listing the top 10, the ATC mentions a few other contenders for the top 10. Included in this list is the North Shore in Swain County. I assume they're referring to the U.S. House approval of a $13M settlement for the "Road to Nowhere" issue. To me, given how long the dispute has existed, this should've been the top story of the year - or at least the top 3.
