“Two Special Rocks” program in Pisgah National Forest

Thursday, November 12th, 2009
This Saturday the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in the Pisgah National Forest will be holding a program from 10 a.m. to noon, called “Two Special Rocks”.

The two-part program will include a discussion with geologists Rich and Sarah McKeever about how John Rock and Looking Glass Rock were formed and what they are made of. After a break, there will be a discussion on the plants and wildlife that make their home on and around the two rocks; such as peregrine falcons, hellbender salamanders, timber rattlesnakes and beavers.

The program is free to the public, and is most suitable for ages 8 to adult.

After the program, participants are welcome to explore the rock environments on their own. The Cat Gap Loop trail, which goes to the summit of John Rock, is roughly a 5.6 mile roundtrip hike. The trail to the top of Looking Glass Rock and back is 6 miles. Both are considered moderately difficult.
