Today is the 110th anniversary of the birth of the Smokies as a park. On Nov. 22-23, 1899, leaders gathered at the Battery Park Hotel in Asheville, NC to create the Appalachian National Park Association. A month later, the group sent a petition to Congress requesting a park, and it became the first such proposal from the East to reach a vote.
In 1911, thanks to the group's efforts, the Weeks Act established Cherokee National Forest.
