Visits to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were up 10.2% in April over the same month in 2009, no doubt largely driven by the Interstate 40 rockslide closure that steered more people through the park, according to park officials.
Of the three main entrances into the park, the largest traffic increase was seen at Cherokee, N.C., which recorded a 39.4% uptick, followed by a 16.9% at the Gatlinburg entrance.
The Townsend entrance saw a 19.4% increase in visitation, likely due to the reopening of the Cades Cove Loop Road on April 24.
Visits among the park's other 13 outlying entrances were down by 6.7% overall.
Overall park visits are still down 2.7% for the year-to-date.
