Lost and Found

Monday, August 23rd, 2010
Q: Where are people most likely to get lost?

A: The Great Smokies

The online version of the August issue of Backpacker Magazine has an outstanding article that offers 33 essential tips to remember if you or your partner goes missing, including "ways to stay found," and what to do if you do become lost. I highly recommend reading this; whether you're a hiking newby or a grizzled outdoor veteran. Hey, everyone needs to brush up on this invaluable knowledge every now and then.

The magazine also published a pretty good video on how to get "Un-Lost" using a GPS and a topo map.

The typical person who gets lost is a male, age 38, hiking solo, during the months of July or August, in the mountains, and often lacking a map and/or compass.

Finally, Backpacker posted a very interesting Q & A with SAR Statistician Robert Koester. Koester has spent the past seven years creating the International Search and Rescue Database. With 50,000 documented incidents, it's the largest, and first, compendium of its kind in the world. He uses the data to analyze risk, and predict who will live, who will die, and, most importantly, where lost hikers may be found.

Become a Backpacker Magazine Map Correspondent

Sunday, May 9th, 2010
Summer hiking season's on, and Backpacker Magazine is looking for a few good hikers to help them expand their digital map room and make even more miles of trails available for download to GPS units, smartphones, and computers. All you need is a GPS unit, a love of the outdoors, and a bit of a gear fetish.

Potential prizes await for all contributors - with the most productive contributor earning a closet-full of Editors Choice gear and an epic trip to the Colorado Rocky Mountains with our map editors.

Backpacker Magazine wants quality trips; with 1-2 pictures per mile (at least 5 images per hike), waypoints for key points-of-interest on the route (trail junctions, water sources, campsites, summits, overlooks, tricky spots, etc.), and, if you can, on-trail video clips. (Here's a near-perfect example on Olympic NP's Hoh River) Your trip could end up in the magazine.

Additionally, each trip you submit enters you in a raffle for a monthly piece of gear; the more trips you submit, the better your chances for winning that month's piece of gear.

But it gets better: By the time hiking season ends in November, Backpacker will count all your submitted trips, and the person with the most gets a full complement of Editors' Choice 2010 gear AND a trip out for an epic adventure in a secret spot in Colorado's Rockies.

Thursday, April 8th, 2010
Backpacker Magazine is again seeking readers who would be interested in becoming a gear tester for the publication in 2010.

The magazine is seeking six passionate, frequent hikers who understand equipment and aren't afraid to tell it like it is. If you match this profile, you'll need to enter the online contest.

If you happen to be one of the lucky winners, you’ll be given regular testing assignments between May 1 and October 1, 2010. Winners will be given regular testing assignments and their names (and photos) will appear in the magazine.

To register for the contest you'll need to send a short (150 word) sample gear review of your favorite piece of gear to Backpacker. Also, the magazine is requiring that you produce and post a YouTube video in order to introduce yourself and show why you would make the perfect Backpacker Magazine Gear Tester.

Backpacker editors will choose six finalists.

Deadline for submission is April 19, 2010. For more information, please click here.
