Great Smokies in the news
Friday, July 2nd, 2010
The Knoxville News Sentinel published two articles this week you might be interested in.
Yesterday, columnist Sam Venable took a somewhat humorous look at how hikers have been trying to "grow" the summit of Mt. LeConte by placing a rock or two from the trail on High Point. He writes about how some people are dropping rocks from other places around the world, as if to trip up geologists. It's an interesting read - click here to check it out.
On Wednesday the paper published an article on how researchers are study the effects of balsam woolly adelgid on Fraser firs. The park is currently monitoring 36 high-elevation fir forests on five different peaks. The study began in 1990, with researchers revisiting the monitoring plots every 10 years. This summer marks the third cycle of data collecting for the fir monitoring study. You can read the full article here.

Brand New Trails Illustrated Maps for the Smokies
Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
National Geographic now has two separate Trails Illustrated Maps for the Great Smoky Mountains - in addition to the old map. National Geographic has divided the Park in two, thus allowing each map to show much greater detail. The original map, which covered the entire Park, had a scale 1:70,000. The two new maps now have a scale of 1:40,000 (1” = .6 miles) and provide much greater detail such as backcountry campsites, footbridges, fords and stream crossings, nature/interpretive trails, as well as detailed trail mileages.
The map for the western section of the Park includes the Cades Cove and Elkmont areas. The map for the eastern section includes Clingmans Dome, Mt. LeConte and the Cataloochee areas.Coverage Highlights Areas and places featured in this map series include: the Appalachian Trail, Benton Mackaye Trail, and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The maps also include scenic overlooks and roadside pull-outs.
Of course you can still purchase the original map that includes the entire Park.
Thanks to the blog reader that was kind enough to drop me an email informing me of these new items.

Mt. LeConte hiker rescued thanks to ham radio operators
Monday, March 29th, 2010
WATE is reporting that an injured hiker on Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains was rescued yesterday thanks to ham radio operators.
Radio operators say another hiker discovered the woman around 11:45 Sunday morning with a severe ankle injury.
He was unable to reach 911 on his cell phone, but was able to use his mobile ham radio to reach radio operators.
They then contacted park officials, who after several hours, were able to reach the woman and take her to the hospital.
That's all the information being reported at this time.

New website for LeConte Lodge winter caretaker
Monday, March 8th, 2010His new website, www.ReflectionsoftheSmokies.com, is already up and running, and promises to continue with even more inspirational photos from the Smokies.
Doug also mentioned that the management for the LeConte Lodge has decided to do their own blog on their own website. Should be interesting to see how they proceed with this.
Speaking of Mt. LeConte, WBIR reported over the weekend that during the months of December, January, and February, the mountain received more than double the average amount of snowfall.
Mt. LeConte received 112" of snow overall during those three months; in an average year, it receives 51 inches.
